Starless unofficial Dwarf image - ALABS v2b

The last version is here:

Hi everyone,

I finally made it! Here’s Starless — a custom, unofficial image (alpha v1) with all my work integrated:

:point_right: GitHub – alabs-mod-custom-images

Included features

  1. New performance view & plugin labeling [1]
  2. Snapshot parameter configuration [2]
  3. Custom controller firmware with plugin parameter editing [3]

To enable parameter grouping, I’ll need to annotate and distribute the turtle plugin descriptor files.
I’m still figuring out the best approach for this, but you can already try some examples [4] by uploading them to the Dwarf via SSH.

Enjoy

Here’s the very first thing I played to try this version: I just picked up my guitar and recorded directly into the Dwarf using Brummer’s stereo recorder :guitar:

:headphones: Starless

P.S.
If you find bugs or have feature requests, please open an issue on GitHub whenever possible.

I’m using your custom build, it’s impressive.

So far everything works flawless, I only noticed a very small glitch on the onboard plugin modification page: sometimes, the parameters still show label “KNOB 1” (or 2 or 3 according to the position) in the background, while the actual control is displayed on top. I noticed it on Chow Centaur “mode” parameter, or in some parameter of LP3 Basic, but i guess can happens anywhere; it’s no big deal as the parameters works flawlessy and by navigating the pages the glithc disappear.

Performance mode is working great too, and it’s very handy on a small screen. The only thing i noticed is that if you are in portrait mode the icons on the left frame are very far one to each other, while in landscape mode they are just perfect. Again, it’s nothing to worry about because to edit a plugin parameter you really need to be in landscape mode, otherwise the controls are to small.

Another improvement it would be the possibility to change the buffer frame size directly on the device.

Sorry if I post here instead of opening a github issue, i’m not very familiar with the tool.

I really enjoy your work, it’s a great improvement on dwarf usability.
Thanks!

I’ll add a small bug: when you re-enter in the plugin list on device, the list highlights the plugin selected when you previously left the list, but the real selection points to the first element instead.

I also noticed that in the edit view the encoders won’t work as buttons: you have to rotate them. I don’t think that’s a bug, I just point out a difference to the standard behavior, but it’s up to you :grinning:

Thanks again.

Latest update for plugin parameters edit: there are some parameters that, although shown, are not editable. I haven’t been able to find similarities to give you a better description.

I also found out that some parameters, although editable both in fine and coarse mode, allows to move in too large increments. One of those is the gain plugin, it seems that is only possible to alter the value in more than one (or more) db increments.

Thanks

Hi Abotte,

thanks so much for your feedback, and no worries about posting it here instead of on GitHub — I’ll make sure to open an issue to keep track of it.

Your report is very clear and helpful, and I’ll do everything I can to fix it.

How to install this release? Sorry I wont be a programmer so…
Come si installa? Scusa ma non sono un esperto … comunque Complimenti!!!

Install it like any other mod image:

  1. Start your device in update mode
  2. Connect to your pc
  3. Copy the tar file into it
  4. Disconnect like you will do with any usb stick

The update should start as usual.

In order to start the device mode in update mode: power on wirth footswitch 1 and the encoder 1 (left most) pressed for at least 5 seconds.

Italiano:

Ciao,

Si installa come un qualsiasi aggiornamento normale:

  1. Fai partire il dwarf in modalità aggiornamento
  2. Connettilo al pc
  3. Copia il file tar nel dwarf
  4. Disconnettilo come fatesti con una qualsiasi penna usb

L’aggiornamento dovrebbe partire automaticamente.

Per far partire il dwarf in modalità aggiornamento: accendilo mentre tieni premuto per circa 5 secondi il footswitch 1 e l’encoder 1 (sono quelli più a sinistra)

Ciao

Grazie!!

What a great idea and project ! Mod Dwarf is such an amazing platform !

Hi Andrea,

am I wrong, or you added the nice feature of substitute a plugin by drag and drop while preserving the cable connections? I red about this feature request time ago, but I’m pretty sure that I wasn’t able to do it with the official build.

Hi,

no I didn’t but the code was there, I based my work on master, perhaps it was already developed but not yet released.

Well, that’s a very nice and unexpected bonus

About this issue do you have a plugin which exhibit this behaviour? I can’t reproduce…

Yes:
GxTubeScreamer, paramerer “Drive”
Chowcentaur, params “Gain”, “Treble”,“Level”
Harmless, param “Shape”
Repro, param "Ceiling’

Sometimes when I try to stress it by navigating the plugins (enter, exit, re-enter, and so on) the system freeze and the led of footswich B turn purple.

Thanks

Same with aida-x on Param1 and Param2. I think it’s related to the way the control of the plugin are defined it it’s turtle file.

I checked and I think that I fix it (I didn’t check Chowcentaur because I don’t have it installed).

Ironically I suspect was related to: Dwarf editing: some parameters move in too large increments · Issue #7 · sejerpz/alabs-mod-custom-images · GitHub

We are near a bugfix release :love_you_gesture:

Thanks for the help!

That’s awesome, I’ll look forward to test your new release :grinning:

By the way, maybe you already fixed it, but regarding the occasional freeze of the UI (with the B footswich led purple), it seems related to parameters exposed as a list, such as the Channel on JCVM: when you scroll to the end of the list you can still go on, probably going out of bounds.

Thanks!

take look ASAP

This is just pure genius and has opened up a whole new perspective for me.
You’re addressing some key issues that I had such as interface performance and selective snapshot
Thank you so much for your time and efforts @AndreaDelSignore :pray:t2:
