Well, that is really unfortunate situation, but totally out of our control. As we have been saying for a while, this current world situation is causing us a lot of issues, and as you can see also to companies way bigger than us like UPS.
Now you can have a small vision of what caused us so many delays on the production…please understand that the delay you are facing on the MOD Dwarf delivery is being multiplied by pretty much all the components inside of it on our side. And it’s just about shipping, it’s multiplied by also the production lines on all parts. That was/is what we need to overcome for the last months (a year already).
@Will_C in February 2020 no one in the world was aware of what was going to happen the following year. We are really thankful for all your continued support and understanding of all this situation. We couldn’t see ourselves overcoming all of these without it.
Hi Jon, I’ve just seen you Kickstarter update that Dwarfs have been sent to all EU backers. Sadly the UK (where I live) is no longer in the EU (I’m not happy about that!!!)… do you have an idea as to when I might get my beta unit…?
keep up the good work! really thankful to be a part of this vision.
Even though I already got my Beta Dwarf a while, I have to say that I have seen a lot of Kickstarter projects with much longer waiting times until delivery… and that even before Covid times. I’ve been actively blogging about crowdfunding projects for several years and have reviewed a good 400 campaigns. If you add it all up (including all the campaigns that didn’t deliver anything in the end), you’re still well in the top quarter of all projects with the current timing. Considering that you are not at all to blame for most of the delays, I think you are doing a great job. Must be said.
Yeah, I just want to add that having read the full Dwarf update, I’m happy to hang in there and wait for mine - it’s been a horrific time for so many people and when you see what’s happening in India and Brazil, the idea of getting upset that my new effects pedal hasn’t arrived yet is kind of a joke… at the end of the day I want MOD Devices to not only survive but to thrive, so this means some tough decisions for sure but the last thing we all want is the company to go bust and then we all lose out. MOD is a fantastic community too - and collectively the vision for these products and the way they are changing the possibilities for modular effects and instruments is pretty revolutionary - I’m very happy to be part of that and while I wait for my Dwarf to arrive there’s a shed load of music that I can make in the meantime…
Keep the faith people - we’ll all get there soon
Yes, me too - I am an early bird kickstarter backer, but am more than happy to have my order held back for a while if it helps!
I have to admit that after reading Your comments I decided to wait more, because few days ago I have doubts and started to look around (I’m not very patient) on a new HX XL and others It will by my first pedal and I really want it as soon as it is possible. The truth is also that as @MikeFlynnBass wrote - I culd do a lot of music in the meantime.
Will the updates sent to Kickstarter backers also be sent out of indigogo backers soon?
Edit: this has now been sent. Thank you for sharing. I’m cheering you and the team on! The decisions seem sensible and hopefully results in more content to consume to scratch the itch in the meantime!
Couldn’t agree with you more. I’ve been really chomping at the bit (I’m one the first duo backers) to get the expression pedal. I’ve got the 1st (I think - maybe 2nd) run of the duo, a beta version I think. I absolutely love it. I’ve also backed the Dwarf, and am looking forward to getting it, but there are so many more important things going on - almost all covid related.
As a previous band mate of mine said “I’ve got everything I need and some of what I want”.
And in the not too distant future I’ll get on stage again (I hope) and people will actually pay me money to have fun!!
Maybe some of us around here are more in need of their dwarf than others. I am thinking of pro players vs. hobbyist.
I am a hobbyist, and if a pro player is badly in need of their dwarf soon, I am happy to go down a place in the queue.
Maybe it would be a good idea for the Mod team to launch a small survey about this to set out a priority queue?
I’m in the mood to help as much as I can in order to let the team being successful
Hey Bob, actually the UK situation was one of the first reasons for us to push a bit back the shipment of those backers. We needed to understand better how it would work (even for the backers’ side).
Right now as we expect to ship more units at once (after getting a fix that we have been testing), we are not really dividing world areas. So in short, your’s may go in one of the next shipments.
Sorry for the delay.
The reason why it happens was that we wanted to inform our backers first about the situation and then give them the normal update on the status of the development/project.
It happens that after posting the update on Kickstarter we noticed a problem to do it on Indiegogo. As it was almost 9 pm we needed to delay it for the other day
As far as I know there will be a survey for backers coming soon. But more on that on the right time.
Thanks for being so nice, altruist and understanding…actually all of you guys! It really warms our hearts
Thanks for the update, Jon - that’s great news! I had a feeling that the UK situation wouldn’t have been helping you guys…
No, it didn’t
Happy Friday Everyone
This week, Andreas, Flavia and myself have been in the heart of Germany, working from the factory that will be producing the MOD Dwarf. We wanted to give you a detailed update about the cool things that have been happening here in week 1 of the visit.
Powder Coating
The aluminium Dwarf enclosures were delivered to the powder coating facility to be painted black. Here you can see a batch of 300 enclosures being pulled straight out of the oven. So fresh you could feel the heat radiating from them! We were very impressed to see how professional and clean the factory was. They are able to spray the powder with 12 jets onto 300 units at once while all over spray is collected and recycled back into the system. The parts look great and the coating is strong! These parts were finished and packaged to be sent to a nearby factory for laser engraving
Laser Engraving
The black coated enclosures arrive at the factory to be laser etched with our own design. The engravings show you all the important info you need to operate the device with a little bit of branding to help spread the word. The machine has multiple laser beams reflected with mirrors so that it can quickly etch all the graphics on each surface. What you are left with is a black enclosure with etching straight through to the raw aluminium which looks like white text on black but it’s more like a light silver text. The finished parts are sent to the assembly factory.
PCBA
The blank PCBs arrive at the PCB factory where they use a combination of SMT and THT to attach all the components. 300 of the controller boards were already finished before we arrived so we could jump straight into testing them. Happily they are working as expected. We received a sample batch of the mainboards to inspect. This week we have been checking over them and trialing the testing process that will be used to check all PCBs functionality and performance before they are assembled. We are doing the final checks to make sure every step in this process is working as expected. Once confirmed, the factory will start to produce 300 mainboards to go with the finished controller boards and be sent to the assembly facility.
Assembly Facility
This has been our hub for the week where we are using the final assembly and testing stations to verify that everything is set up here and ready to go to start assembling Dwarfs in higher quantities. While inspecting the displays, we had a great suggestion from the factory owner for a way to seal the displays into the enclosure without glue that will help to keep everything secure and prevent dust from finding its way into the screen. So we are testing this process and making fixtures for assembling parts with greater accuracy and consistency. We are surrounded by boxes of parts that have arrived in the recent weeks. We are just waiting for the processors to arrive on monday so that we can start to fully assemble the first production units.
Final thoughts
The nicest part about the production flow is that the 4 facilities I mentioned are all within 10km of each other so it’s very easy to get parts from one place to another without wasting time and energy. If there are any mistakes in engraving or scratches in the enclosure they can be brought back to the coating factory to be recoated so there is minimal wasted materials. If a PCB is faulty it can easily go back to PCBA to be repaired or to replace the faulty components and now that we have an extensive testing system it is easy for the factory to quickly find the faults to be repaired. We are very excited here and looking forward to next week.
Have a nice weekend!
Love this!
Great job guys! In spare time, could you send me one of these jewels?
Fantastic! thank you for this extensive update!
