Thanks dude - all bass sounds are a mix of my Digitech Whammy - down an octave and up an octave on the solo - wah/phaser/delay and glitches from the Dwarf
Thanks for sharing it
Hey fellas,
Iām back, sort of.
Rearranged my set up a bit, and of course brought my lovely noise issue back, but Iāll deal with that next week when I beging to finalize the gear I want to use for the next few months, and begin the troubleshooting process again.
Since I felt productive, I decided to record a track.
MDX is running a dual shimmer shiroverb, with phantomzone chorus, rmpro, and ping pong panner on my hydrasynth.
The rest of the synths were handled with internal effects.
Deepmind 12 on pluck arp
Hydrasynth on pad
Erebus V3 for lead
Tracker running drums.
I tried to keep it short and simple. Hope you enjoy!
P.S.
I also recorded all my stems this time like a good boy.
EDIT:
Sneaking one more in
stems. so responsible.
nice track, sir @Elk_wrath!
ā¦particularly enjoying how different elements have their own attitude about time; deepmind loves to be way on top of the beat, eh?!
Thanks Plutek!
Hope you are doing well!
And yeah actually! Lol I had programmed the hydrasynth and deepmind at different arp speeds, but the deepmind seems to have its own way of going about it but I definitely cranked the speed on it. I donāt mind, I ended up dialing in by ear and rather enjoyed the result myself haha
I am gonna get set back for a while, as I bit the bullet and ordered an OT2 as I want to change my workflow into a more live sampling/looping/performance oriented direction.
I am feeling the edges of the box that I stepped into with the tracker, as my workflow primarily hinges on building tracks by ear and would like the ability to sample on the fly.
Unfortunately that means I have to learn Elektronās flow, and I heard itās hard.
@Elk_wrath I like your equipment! It looks awesome and you create cool sounds and music with it! ā¦and I see the DuoX on the image. Are you also still working also with the Dwarf or did you replace it by the DuoX?
So good man! good to see you are back at it! also the setup looks pretty neat
I really like the second video āRaindropā. I canāt wait to play a video game with you music playing on it
Hey Kim!
Thanks so much for your kind words!
I have way more gear than I need tbh. However, Iāve been having a blast working on sound design with different pieces of gear. Iām hoping that when my octatrack arrives, Iāll be able to slim down my work area and focus on live sampling a few synths and running some loops.
Right now the MDX is actually pretty critical in my set up, and so it is on the desk 100% of the time.
Unfortunately, trying to manage both the MDX and Dwarf at the same time on a single device has proven to be too cumbersome to mess with the gui situation, so the MDX is the champ for me. Eventually Iāll set up my laptop and do the dwarf on USB and MDX as Bluetooth on my iPad.
Eventually Iāll get both worked back in using my octatrack since I can use it as a mixer and have dedicated sends.
I say all of this like I know how to use an octatrack, and I donāt. So I imagine it will take me a little bit to get this new set up figured out this weekend haha
Hey James!
Thanks so much!
I was not a fan of how that raindrop track came out when I initially recorded it, but it came out okay. It was weird not having bass or drums, and there is some sound missing that I want to put into it to round it out, but Iāll make a new track for that haha
Who knows, maybe one of my buddies will program a game and Iāll send them a track. Thatās about as far as Iāll get on that front, but mostly due to a lack of effort on my end haha
@Elk_wrath Hi Elk, thank you for the insight. This is very interesting for me. While I am a guitarist and mandolinist, I have also been involved with sampling, synthesizers and grooveboxes (e.g. Novation Circuit) in conjunction with the Reaper DAW for a while. However by far not as professional, as you. Andā¦ modular synths are an eternal mystery to me, they look that complicatedā¦ Iām always happy when you post something, itās always very interesting.
In the same way you look at my modular synths, I look at stringed instruments haha
Itās a completely different skill, and itās one I envy. I love watching you guys shred on traditional instruments haha
Step sequencing takes a lot of musical pressure off of me, since I cant really jack a track up too bad unless Iām trying to make something syncopated like āThe Returnā track.
In terms of sampling, believe it or not, I rarely sample. I have some drum samples that I use since I donāt have a drum machine, generally all of my tracks are sequenced hardware synths, or at least the majority of it. Sampling is actually kind of a pain in the butt with my tracker because I have to load stuff up on the SD card, and then manipulate it on the tracker with a jog wheel. Its just not fun lmao
The truth is that half the time I donāt even know whatās going on with my patches, and Iāve straight up lost patches by exploring too far and couldnāt walk myself back to the sound I was exploring lol. I also have a really hard time with not just trying to patch every jack, so half the time Iām just throwing spaghetti at a wall and seeing what sticks
Interested to see how you go with the octatrack. @jesse has some pretty legit skills with that thing but he says itās a beast to learn
Bro Iām both scared and excited. It has all the features Iāve been looking for (couldnāt afford it so I bought my tracker), but that elektron layout looks like itās gonna take a grip to get a handle on the OT.
I found EZBOT on YouTube the other day and subbed, that guy is amazing with the OT2 and posts nothing but tutorials. Same with The Messy Desk youtube channel. He wants to charge hourly for lessons, and doesnāt post many tutorials, but he is at least entertaining and does have info to share.
I know 100% that the OT2 is gonna set me back months, but I get the distinct feeling that if I stick with it, Iāll have a much better tool in my hands to achieve the results I want lol
Enjoy the OT ride man, itās been a bumpy one for me at the start, but one thing is certain: never going to get rid of mine. There is simply nothing quite like it.
Feel free to hit me up sometime to exchange some ideas for combining the OT with MOD units, always happy to!
Oh man, Iām getting excited. OT2 is arriving early tomorrow!
Iāll get it installed tomorrow and start digging around in the manual so I have some rudimentary knowledge for the weekend.
I will for sure hit you up when I get to that point of complexity!
Have fun!
If I can give one tip that I wish somebody gave me at the start: donāt try to learn all features at once, but instead just pick a single usecase and learn how to do it. Keep repeating that process until you start to understand the full beast.
So if you want to use it to sequence MIDI gear, and sample+playback clock synced loops, and as a drum machine, just pick one of those and focus on learning that first. The OT really started to click with me once I started doing that.
Having said that, throwing a copy of the manual in the bathroom for some casual reading may help too
I appreciate the kind advice!
I have definitely caught myself biting off more than I can chew when I get in front of a new piece of gear, however, this is one of the pieces of gear I will take a bunch of time to learn.
Military used to train us up with a ācrawl, walk, run phaseā so I guarantee that I will be crawling for a while. Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.
And if Iām being honest with myself, Iām already thinking of stuff I shouldnāt be, like relegating my tracker to pure midi CC sequencing synced to the OT2 and merging the midi info in my rk-006.
Is it possible? Probably, should I even consider that yet, no lmao
EDIT:
First day really sitting down with the OT2. Havenāt scratched the surface of its functionality, but Iām somewhat operational.
I can live sample, record samples, access both sequencers and get them running nicely with my external hardware, mixing is pretty easy (mixing 4 external monosynths), and so are applying effects.
This thing has a lot going on with it, and it will 100% take me a while to wrap my head around this. Iām not struggling too bad with navigation, but it does seem pretty easy to get lost while menu diving lol
Luckily I have a long weekend, and Iāll keep plugging away at it when I get back from my buddies house
Hi everyone,
Iāve made this video with my new band where I use the Dwarf mainly for delays but for random panning too (on the 3rd tune) :
Hope youāll enjoyā¦
Really nice man! the heavy sections give me snarky puppy vibes. I love it!
