Did I see somewhere that the Dwarf can play samples? Is it possible to trigger them by playing a bass guitar?
I have a G&L Fallout shortscale bass tuned in 5ths. It’s modified to have a fitth string. It might get a sixth. lol
Anyway, currently I’m using a EHX: Tri-Parallel Mixer with a Mel9 Intelligent Harmony Machine one one channel. A S9 in another, and a Fuzzhugger: Doom Bloom in another. It gets cool pseudo-cello & orchestral sounds.
Is there any way to do this with the Dwarf?
I do like slightly off-kilter but beautiful. I’m not exactly striving for the perfect Wednesday Addams cello sound but, I don’t want it to sound like a Toys “Я” Us synthesized cello either.
Separate from any sample triggering, you might want to start by finding a cello IR and load it with one of the several IR loaders available.
If I remember correctly, Guthrie Govan used a violin IR and a volume pedal to play some Paganini-like arpeggios live on electric guitar in recent years
you can use the GxTuner midi out to trigger a cello synth, but you have to up the gain like crazy into the GxTuner, maybe tweak some other settings too, and there will always be a bit of a delay on the synth sounds… depending on your use case it could work
So, I watched some videos on how the Electro-Harmonix : Attack Decay works. I think the best way to do this is to modify the attack… and decay. lol. Along with adding some fuzz, increasing sustain, and a small amount of modulation.
It’d be cool if there were one virtual pedal but, a number of others could be cobbled together I think. I still haven’t had a chance to test the platform, yet.
There is a Slowgear emulation available on the platform. Which is similar to the Attack Decay I think. A bit of vibrato would be nice too I think. Maybe that’s what you mean by modulation. And maybe it’s also doable to incorporate in your playing style
This video might spark some inspiration too:
Even though this is about synthesized sound. Some of these ideas might apply to bass too. It’s awesome to hear what happens when the reverb is engaged! (Around 12:30)
This one is also inspiring. Create a cello in Surge XT](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vphrdOzIE6c)
Surge XT modules can be used with the CardinalFX plugin (beta) and since you can only get a monophonic signal using pitch to CV you don`t have to think about the polyphonic/MPE part of the process. You can start off by exploring the “guitar synth pedalboards” in the shared pedalboards section and then later add Cardinal FX as your sound module in the chain.
Really interesting and awesome!!
MPE definitely makes the emulation even more convincing. I think I’m going to try this patch with my Erae Touch which has been collecting dust
MPE works well with in the MOD ecosystem, but you need to limit the amount of polyphony depending on the patch. It is easier when using Cardinal as it has a MPE mode in the MIDI module, which makes assigning the different ccs easier. The MIDI learn function, when patching normal pedalboards isnt as easy to use. Because you have to be able to “move” the right CC, which is difficult when velocity, channel pressure, CC74, pitchbend in MPE are sent “simultanously”.
Could filtering the midi input for a specific MPE midi event and then sending that to the midi loopback output work? In theory that filtered event would then be sent last. But maybe it’s more complex when it’s a continuous stream of events.
