Assigning samples to pads

I feel like this should be an easy thing and that I’m missing something fundamental here, but I’ve done a lot of searching and haven’t found a simple answer, so before I continue with the complicated solution, I thought I’d ask here.

The goal: I want a set of different samples assigned to the pads on my Arturia Minilab 3. These could be a clown horn, cymbal crash or a 2 min sample from Twin Peaks, whatever, I want to hit the pad and have the sample play once. Hilarity / mystery ensue.

Firstly I can’t seem to find a plugin that would do this. So if you know one, that would be great.

Not finding the perfect plugin, my next step is looking at the available sampler/audio file players.

I’ve rigged up the Audio File plugin by saving a load of files as presets and then assigning these to a Mod Dwarf control to select them and then another MD control to engage the player. It’s a slow way of doing things and doesn’t have the spontaneity I want.

With the Exampler plugin, I’ve used midi plugins to filter all but one note. It’s one sample per Exampler plugin and then a filter for the plugin. It looks a bit mad and it still uses note keys rather than the pads. I could set it up to use the pads but only by filtering the notes they play - which means I could inadvertently trigger samples were I to play the same notes on the keyboard keys. The pads only seem to be recognised by the MOD Dwarf as generating notes rather than their potential as a controller / trigger. (This could be something else I’m getting wrong/missing).

Any thoughts much appreciated

I would say that although it sounds weird, what you described are the best ways to achieve what you want (with the Audio File and presets or lots of Examplers), since there’s not really a Sampler plugin available in the MOD platform - if you find some good LV2 options online feel free to share them, it may be easy to port.

I guess they send Note messages (normally it’s like that). Can you use some MIDI monitor to take a look at the messages that come from the pads?

use the “MIDI Display” plugin on your MOD device to see what exactly is being sent by the Minilab.

The DISTRHO - DIE Fluid Synth can do something like this. You would need to use something like Polyphone to construct an sf2 sound font with the sounds you want - but having done that they can be just trigged by keys (like most percussioni sf2 sound fonts) once the sf2 file has been imported into the Mod and then selected in the DISTRHO - DIE Fluid Synth

Ohhh thanks. Another rabbit hole to check out

I’ve tried to find this plugin but I can’t. Maybe it isn’t available on the MOD Dwarf (seems an odd one not to have though)?

That’s weird, the plugin is available also for the Dwarf (I use it on my unit).

i think it’s in beta… make sure to check that box in the plugin store.

Nope, is a stable plugin. It’s inside Generator category.
