I use input 2 for a dynamic vocal mic, and I turn the input 2 gain up to reach sufficient level. However there is a significant background noise in all pedalboards involving a mic. I guess some kind of mic preamp could do the trick, but I would appreciate any advice on this matter.
Probably a number of possible solutions. I use a Shure a85f lo-z xlr female to hi-z 1/4-inch male in-line impedance transformer for my SM58. Works as expected. No noise that I’ve noticed.
Thanks, VeggieSoup. Forgive me if my questions are stupid, I’m a noob when it comes to this:
- Is there some kind of electronics involved in this unit that makes a difference compared to my regular xlr-to-jack-cable?
- What input level do you need on the Dwarf to get a decent output level?
UPDATE: I see now that it offers a 24dB increase gain. Will give it a try.
The adapter may solve your issue and you may not need the info, but I have both inputs at -3.0 dB and both outputs at -27.5 dB. I play into the front end of a Roland JC-120. I switch among a few different guitars on input 1 and have input 2 dedicated to the SM58 mic through the adapter. The signal strength is comparable from the mic and the guitars. I’m a not-very-sophisticated bedroom player, but the SM58 outputs a low level signal and that adapter has been enough for me. I imagine there are other solutions. https://www.sweetwater.com/insync/understanding-signal-levels-audio-gear/
Thanks again. Much appreciated. I have ordered the unit.
Other than the noise issue, I’m satisfied with the vocal chain on my Dwarf, also compared to my VoiceLive Play (now sold) and my newly purchased Hotone Stage II.
Yes, I run into Dwarf dsp limits when I have a decent elguitar chain on input 1, but only when I introduce the AutoTune plugin in my vocal chain. Apart from that, I can use both a de-sser, a doubler and an harmonizer with no issue, as well as separat reverbs for guitar and vocal.
Great unit. And great community.
If you are having CPU capacity challenges, give the portal plugins a try Introducing Portal
Also, snapshots to turn only necessary plugins on and off can save CPU usage.
Yes , the Portal improved things!
Just to confirm: That did the trick. Noiseless mic in my Dwarf now.
Good info!
I was using the Dwarf at band rehearsal yesterday and just like you, I noticed years ago I have to raise de gain to get a decent signal. A sound tech in training came to visit us and noticed the noise, which is less subtle when amplifying in a loud punkthrash rehearsal setting
Until today I was n00b enough to be completely oblivious to something like @VeggieSoup was suggesting so I’ll probably order me THAT kind of converter as well (I was also using a “regular” one)
@kimborg do you mind sharing your pedalboard? We, vocal mic users, are a select group amongst a relative small userbase (MOD) so I’m always curious how others use it.
Here is the Pedalboard: Vocal, background vocal and electric guitar. - MOD Audio
I’ve recorded a short demo (one of my own songs), but cannot upload mp3 or wav here. But you can download the mp3 here.
Thanks for sharing! The first section of your vocal chain is very similar to mine already
