Say hello to the MOD Dwarf

I think that we shouldn’t express latency in milliseconds. I think the proper unit should be in additional metres from the amp.

For instance, instead of 5ms, we should say an additional 1.65m from the amp. Instead of 8ms, we should say an additional 2.64m.

But I agree users should be able to pick whatever latency they want.

Hello team,

Any chance we get midi 2.0 on the dwarf?

Or on any unit, probably? is the answer.
JACK (which we use for audio handling) supports it, as confirmed by people from MMA https://github.com/jackaudio/jack2/issues/535

No one in the MOD team is part of the MMA group, so we don’t know any specifics.
Let’s wait to see the first MIDI 2.0-capable hardware devices out there.
But there is nothing that stops us, the MOD team, for giving such support.

Of course, plugins will have to be made compatible with it.
But LV2 (the plugin standard we use) is extensible, contrary to VST2 and VST3 which cannot do MIDI2 (not without many ugly hacks)

Will there be a stretch goal for 225K? We are close with only 2 days left!

We won’t.

My original plan was to have a final stretch goal at 225k or even 250k, for a professional guitar amplifier.

But I did not manage to come up with a commercial agreement on time for the Kickstarter campaign. And I’ve been talking to three of them.

What I can tell is that at the point we launch the Dwarf in the market, there will be at least one commercial partner supplying great guitar tube-amps simulations for the MOD platform

Please allow this question from an interested follower:

How does/will the Dwarf compare against the Duo X?

the only difference I can grasp are the 2 display screens and larger amount of buttons/knobs.
Further, the Duo X any seems to have the CV-control functionality and pagination on top as well as the S/PDF out.
I would be interested for use in a rack or table-top.

So, if I am not interested in the CV part, I could buy just 2x the Dwarf and get the same display area.

Do I miss anything or did I overlook any aspect?

One major feature of the Dwarf is built-in footswitches. There are none on the Duo X, but for table-top use you probably don’t care.
Also, I believe the Dwarf has a significant performance boost (beefier processor).

OK, thanks.

I would not mind using it also with instruments.

But if the knobs & buttons are the difference, maybe they could offer different outer cases in future for different use.

@gianfranco
Is there a feature comparison table somewhere for the 3 products?

regardig the processor, see https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/modduo/mod-dwarf/comments?comment=Q29tbWVudC0yNzQxMTYyNQ%3D%3D&reply=Q29tbWVudC0yNzQxMjI1MA%3D%3D for a comparison

the dwarf has a better processor than the duo, but is not as fast as the duo x.

you can see (some?) differences when you compare the following resources:

https://wiki.moddevices.com/wiki/MOD_Duo#Technical_specs
https://wiki.moddevices.com/wiki/Duo_X_User_Guide#Device_features
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/modduo/mod-dwarf (look for an image “MOD DWARF SPECIFICATIONS”)

There is one on the making

@Andre would you have something for us?

I’m in love with this project! I’d like to know if it will be possible to use an external expression pedal for wha/volume. Also, there will be a “ground lift” switch? Are the out jacks balanced?

external midi expression pedals are working, see, e.g., MIDI Foot Controller Recommendation

according to https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/modduo/mod-dwarf/faqs the outputs are not balanced.

i don’t know about the ground lift switch. i have not yet read anything about that, therefore i don’t think there will be one.

Will it be possible to upgrade the CPU? Just in case…

No, not on the dwarf

Thanks! I would consider it as a huge plus for next products. HW and SW upgrade-ability… wow!

Wondering if it would be possible to run a VST plugin doing some hacks. It would be interesting to me to have the possibility to run VST plugins like black-box elements on pedalboard at least.

you cant run regular 32/64bit windows plugins on a linux ARM system though.
if the plugin has a linux ARM version, like pianoteq and a few others, then it might be doable.

for a windows plugin to work on linux, first you need wine.
then because the CPU architecture does not match, you will need virtualization on top.
all this would make it run extremely slow.

it is just much better to contact plugin authors and make them know of your interest on getting them working in Linux.
and we are all quite open to that. I have ported a few plugins myself.

Hello!

Hi to all
I’m waiting for Dwarf and also absolutelly new in the Mod world. Can someone suggest something to read to enter in this world? I’m speaking from the user point of view (no developer for now). I don’t have Mod pedal so can’t play with plugin, effects, GUI or other “real” part of the pedal.
There is a Help document for beginer?
