Some of you will no doubt remember the Yamaha UB-99 Magic Stomp pedal? What makes it stand out even today among the plethora of effects processors is this device’s ability to have 8 simultaneous time based effects (8 stage delays and chorus effects, pitch shifting etc.,) running in a single patch. When the device was introduced there was nothing to match that processing power other than Yamaha’s own UD Stomp.
So my question is, which of the Mod devices would I need to be able to build virtual pedal boards with all the necessary plugins for my needs including power hungry plugins such as convolution reverbs etc., in addition to plugins which can duplicate or replicate what the Magic Stomp does?
In fact, the Magic Stomp was a very versatile and powerful processor for its time, but from what I can see of the Mod devices they should be far more capable, and their processors should be capable of handling far more than the MS - particularly since it is limited to a single effect of this type, meaning that none of the other effects available can be added to that algorithm.
I suspect that only the MODX has sufficient power for what I need, but that the Mod Dwarf may have insufficient power, but I just wanted a confirmation.
I think you’ll be fine with the Dwarf, since you can use convolution reverb on the Dwarf (but I don’t think Yamaha stomp did)
Delays can be very low CPU hungry, or quite high, there are plenty of choices in the store.
If you want to use multiple convolution (reverb or speaker IR) or multiple amp simulations… you still can double the buffer size (from 128 to 256 samples) or you can use the modX.
Thank you. Today the guy selling the MODX dropped the price to equal that of a used Mod Dwarf also selling on Wallapop, so I decided to take the plunge. I think in the end this device will better serve my needs, even though it may seem like overkill…
So now I’m going to need to compile all the information so when it arrives I will be ready to start to build the pedal boards I intend using. So I’d appreciate any advice or tips you might be able to offer me
Ah I had one of those purple Yamaha monster magic stomps. It was amazing for its time. It did me a many gigs. I really regret selling it way back because as you say you were stuck with the one algorithm. I spent so long chasing that 8 delay power too! I went to zoom multis, big pedal boards, thought the strymon timeline would satisfy my delay cravings; and no surprises ended up with the dwarf. It is so much better than all those other options. Happy pedal board building!
Thank you Jarry. I ended up choosing the MODX device because it was on offer for a price I couldn’t refuse, and I have to agree with you - these devices are simply amazing! One can only imagine what Allan Holdsworth might have been able to do had he been able to use a single mod device instead of 6 Magic Stomps for his live effects…
So how did you approach the multiple delay line setup using the Mod Dwarf? Do you have any pedal boards to help me get started?
I love chaining a dry input straight to the output, then running multiple full wet bollie xt delays in parallel with any of the reverbs in series with the delays.
This allowed for some epic ambience.
The bollie xt and galactic reverbs are my favourites for instant epic. You don’t even need that many instances.
See my original reason for getting a mod audio device was to be able recreate the Diamond halo chorus with a ramping Leslie style tremolo speed change. I wanted a custom pedal and this was the way that was affordable.
I’m super impressed with what’s possible and how easy it is to get there (once you know your way around)
I’m currently recreating a polymoon style delay reverb with the dx10 synth module and it sound as good as the Roland Gaia and Strymon cloudburst I’ve borrowed. Can’t do the amount of notes but man it’s fun.
Good luck in recreating your own version of the magic stomp
