Play sample when I press a footswitch

Is there a way that I can create a pedalboard where I can assign samples to selected footswitches? The idea: when I press the footswitch the sample will play to the end. When I press it again it starts from scratch. Different foot switches are assigned to different samples.

I found the exampler plugin, but it needs a MIDI input. How can I have a Dwarf pushbutton generate a MIDI note?

Ah yes, the infamous Mindi! It works, thanks!
We are restarting our band, and our first project is a Therapy? tribute set. For ‘Teethgrinder’ I need to play some samples while I play my bass. With Mindi I can make it work, besides having proper bass processing. The only thing I need to ensure is that the bass sound and the samples are well configured and mixed, such that the mixing engineer does not do much with the bass channel which would hamper the samples. Alternatively, I could do two mono channels; bass left, samples right. Let’s see.

I used mindi + samplv1. Only problem it plays the sample for me when I power on the MDX.

How about using sidechain compressing to to make the samples stand out?

Thanks for all your input and tips. I got it to work with mindi and exampler, the samplv1 was a bit too feature rich for what I needed. Since we do silent rehearsals (our drummer has an electric kit), I can actually do the mix of the bass and sample in the MOD (I put some gains on the rotary encoders). I think a sidechain compressor would not deliver the desired effect for me, but it is a good suggestion. Maybe I would need some EQ.

I will also add the intro for ‘a moment of clarity’ in the pedalboard. It will be awesome.
