New Plugin - MIDI Recorder

ABotte Sounds is proud to fill a void in the ecosystem by introducing MIDI Recorder.

It’s a simple plugin that records incoming MIDI notes and controller moves and saves each take as a Standard MIDI File on the device.

Controls and display

Control Range / default What it does
REC button off Starts a take when switched on; stops and saves it when switched off.
Tempo knob 20–300 BPM, 120 Sets the tempo written in the file and the grid the notes are placed on. Drag or use the wheel; double-click resets to 120. It does not follow the pedalboard tempo.
Trim Start switch on Moves the first recorded event to the very start of the file, removing the silence before you play.
Bypass footswitch LED lit = active Bypassing saves the take in progress and stops recording.

The green display shows the elapsed time, the number of events captured, a dot that blinks when MIDI arrives, and a status line. The states are:

Status Meaning
READY Not recording.
● RECORDING A take is in progress.
SAVED #0004 The take was written; the number is the file number (abotte_rec_0004.mid).
NOTHING PLAYED You stopped without any MIDI, so no file was written.
SAVE ERROR The file could not be written (for example, storage full or folder not writable).

Saved files

Takes are saved in /data/user-files/MIDI Songs, named abotte_rec_0001.mid, abotte_rec_0002.mid and so on. The plugin picks the first free number when it saves, so existing files are never overwritten.

Files are Standard MIDI File format 0 (one track) at 480 pulses per quarter note, with a tempo event from the Tempo knob and 4/4 time. They open in any DAW or MIDI player, and the folder is the same one MOD uses for its own MIDI songs.

Behaviour

  • What is recorded: channel messages only: notes, control changes, program changes, pitch bend and pressure. Clock, active sensing and system exclusive messages are dropped.
  • When a take is saved: on switching REC off, on bypass, when the plugin is deactivated and when it is removed from the pedalboard, so a take is not lost if you pull the plugin mid-recording.
  • Hanging notes: notes still held and an active sustain pedal are released at the end of the take.
  • Realtime safety: the file is written by a background thread, so recording does not disturb audio.
  • Length: one take holds up to 131,072 events; beyond that, further events are ignored.
  • The Tempo knob only sets the file’s tempo and grid; it is not synced to the host.
