I’ve got some crackling noises when I use an amp with gain. I know noise is inherent when doing that, but it’s not like a hum. It sounds like a record without sound, kinda scratchy.
Turning on the ground loop thing helped a TON, but it’s still there. When using a clean amp it goes away.
Even though it can still be related to the CPU. Better said, it can be related to some particular plugin or combination of plugins that is causing X-runs. Your noise issue sounds exactly like that, X-runs.
Are you able to check on the WebGUI if you are having X-runs when that sound kicks in?
Nope no xruns at all. I did some testing and it’s actually just the gain turned up on the “Onyx” amp. The volume was only at 50% with no other gain mods, so it seemed like too much noise for what it was doing.
Any/All OD or distortion or gain functions increase noise, but it’s a different kind of noise than an amp. Kind of a static/crackling noise instead of the standard “60 cycle hum” kind of noise.
Not a big deal, I don’t think anything is broken, and I have been using the noise gate. I would be interested in techniques for reducing the noise floor, best practices with noise gates, and how to get a lot of gain without too much noise (I know, I’m demanding).
That’s expected. Basically, these types of plugins are increasing your levels of gain (and noise floor); therefore, our advice is to pay attention to gain staging also inside your pedalboard if the produced noise is inconvenient.
Actually, I would like to know more about the Onyx issue. It may be a problem there, even if it’s with the levels allowed for you to dial in.
Not sure if you read this here. You may find some important tips.
The noise does happen with other plugins if you go nuts with the gain. Sometimes it happens sooner than expected - like an amp + OD pedal with neither at extreme settings. I realize that is not helpful at all, most likely a RTFM issue on my part.
To test the Onyx amp noise, just turn the gain (and clipping?) up to 80%+, keeping volume at 50.
This is just a theory, but I had the first part of my chain in mono → stereo → back to mono near the end of the chain. After I changed everything to mono, the noise seemed reduced.
Altough that seems like nothing extreme we are talking about two things that increase gain (amp and an overdrive effect), I’m not sure which amp you are using, but if it’s something slightly overdriven, crunchy, high gain, etc. the gain staging goes considereably up, so you will need to compensate somewhere to avoid noise issue. That’s in general expected.
The Onyx is already quite an overdriven amp, so that matches what I wrote above. I must tell you that I’m not using that specific amp for a while (I think meanwhile with all AIDA, NAM and a few new amps like Roamer or Red Apple, the platform got better offers than that, but this is subjective), anyway, I remember that I always felt the Onyx with a gain/volume issue, every time I was using it my volume was going up quite a lot just from it.
It’s also expected. As soon as you were getting back to mono, you were just summing up both stereo channels; therefore, you were increasing your gain level.
