Heartbeat type of noise on MOD Duo X

Continuing the discussion from Possible broken dev MOD Duo:

Hello dear MOD team,

I purchased the MOD (MOD 2X) and have been using it for about two years now. Overall, I have been quite satisfied with it. Of course, I have experienced some small problems, but in general I have been happy with the device because it allows me to design and process unique sounds. As a creative musician, this is very important and satisfying for me.

However, there are some technical issues. First of all, from the very beginning the bypass function has not worked properly. I was told that it might be related to a software issue.

Also, as I understand, there have not been many updates or service improvements for quite some time.

Recently I encountered another problem. When I took the device to a studio and connected it in order to record, I clearly heard a noise that sounds like a “beep-beep,” similar to a heartbeat. There is a kind of clicking or ticking noise that makes it impossible to record a clean signal.

I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions you might have to help solve this problem.

I live in Armenia, not in Europe, so unfortunately I cannot physically bring the device to you for service. What would you recommend in this situation?

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Hello @Noro,

I’m not really sure if this is related to the topic in the thread, since that was about a dev MOD Duo.
You seem to have a “normal” device (not “dev”). Could you tell me exactly which one it is? You wrote:

We don’t have any device called “MOD 2X”. Considering that you mentioned the hardware bypass, I assume that either is a MOD Duo or a MOD Duo X. Could you please clarify?

Regarding this particular aspect, it sounds to me like the noise the device makes when the USB B port is connected to the computer (for accessing the WebGUI) simultaneously with the recording attempt. Wasn’t that the case?

Hello,
Yes, I am referring to the Mod Duo X device.
I would like to mention that the noise coming from the device is not related to whether it is connected via USB or not. The noise is present in both cases — when the device is connected to the computer via USB and also when nothing is connected and I am using it independently.
I also notice this issue when recording in the studio. The noise (a kind of pulsating ticking sound) is not only audible, but it is also visible in the recorded track waveform.
Thank you very much in advance if you can help with this issue. I appreciate your support and hope we can stay in touch and find a solution.
Thank you.

Sure, I will do my best to help you find a solution.

It sounds to me that you are listening noise produced by the CPU. Although this is somehow normal, it should never be so loud that it creates an interference on a recording.
Can you tell me 2 things:

  1. Have you tried to work out the output gain settings on your device for a better result?
  2. Does it happen with a particularly heavy CPU pedalboard or with all?

PS: I also moved your issue to a new thread since it was quite out of topic on the previous one

One thing to test, just to rule it out, since I had noise issues at first.

More specifically this part:

Ps. At first I thought that something else was also broken, because once the relays started working again, I experienced a high pitched whine when connecting a guitar to Input 1. There was no noise when using the Input 2.
But after a lot of additional troubleshooting I found that the CV/Expression port was set to CV by default. Switching this to Expression pedal (with nothing connected to it physically) removed the whine completely. Interesting, but I guess there was some interference creeping into Input 1 when this was set to CV without anything connected in that socket.
